Ruling Over the Heart

Read 2 Samuel 3:17–21

Resisting temptation is a daily struggle for most people, for others it’s an all-out battle. They try and try, but somehow can’t seem to overcome. That isn’t what God has planned for us. He provides a way to break the power of sin.

Then Abner said to David, “Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a compact with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace (2 Samuel 3:21).

Just like there couldn’t be two rulers over the people of Israel, there isn’t room for two rulers in anyone’s heart. You have to choose whom you will serve: God or sin. When God rules over the heart, sin has no room to stay.

God isn’t satisfied with just most of your heart. He wants it all. With Him ruling over your life, sins that used to trap you will have no hold. It may take time, but God will deliver you from the temptation and sin that binds you. Imagine the peace that such freedom brings.

Thought for Today: You can live a life of holiness because Jesus reigns supreme in your life.
